Nha Trang is a resort city on Vietnam's south-central coast and the former capital of Khanh Hoa Province. • Long Son Pagoda (Chùa Long Sơn) — a Buddhist temple with a large white Buddha statue 24 metres high from the ground; 152 stone steps lead up to it, and the observation deck offers a view of the city.
• Nha Trang Beach on the Tran Phu promenade — the city's main beach strip: white sand, a promenade and the main concentration of hotels, restaurants and bars.

Nha Trang: beaches and excursions

The main reason to come here is the sea. In the bay is the Hon Mun Marine Protected Area, one of the world's first such areas accepted by IUCN: diving and snorkelling are concentrated here. Boat trips around the islands often cost less than $20 and include lunch. A separate local hit is mud baths (for example, Hon Tam and Thap Ba): they are usually combined with island and beach tours.

When is the best time to go to Nha Trang?

The climate here is tropical, with a long dry season from January to August and a short wet season from September to December, when most of the annual precipitation falls (about 1,300 mm) under the northeast monsoon. In October–November, heavy downpours associated with typhoons are not uncommon. Average daytime temperatures stay at roughly 24 to 30 °C all year round. In summer the most tourists arrive, so rooms are harder to find.

How to get to Nha Trang

The city is served by Cam Ranh International Airport (CXR) about 30 km to the south — Vietnam's fourth-busiest airport. There are domestic flights from Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Da Nang, Vinh and Hai Phong, and international flights from South Korea, China, Malaysia and Thailand. From the airport, a fixed-rate taxi to the centre costs about 250,000 dong, and bus No. 18 costs about 65,000 dong and takes about 50 minutes. Nha Trang also lies on the main Hanoi–Ho Chi Minh City railway line, and sleeper buses connect the city with Ho Chi Minh City (10–12 hours), Hoi An, Da Lat and Mui Ne.

Getting around the city

• City buses are cheap — usually about 10,000 dong. Bus No. 4 is especially convenient: it passes through the tourist area and past the Vinpearl cable car, Hon Chong Cape, Po Nagar Towers and the cathedral.
• Mai Linh and Vinasun taxis and the Grab app are widely used; a short city trip costs a few tens of thousands of dong.
• Bicycle rental — about 30,000–50,000 dong per day, cycle rickshaw — about $15 per day.
• It is pleasant to walk mainly along the well-kept beach promenade: in other districts the pavements are often occupied.
